Slinger Case

April 3, 2015

Ever notice how nature creates beautiful patterns that just seem to fit together perfectly? Like the way cracks form in dry earth, or how giraffe spots create unique patches? I used these natural patterns to design a unique phone case that's both beautiful and functional.

Creating the case took me down a creative rabbit hole. I started the design by making hand-drawn versions of this pattern - with little knowledge of what made it work. Quickly realizing that the concept was inspired by nature, I happened upon the mathematics behind this beautiful pattern – defined by Russian mathematician Georgy Voronoy. His “voronoi diagram” enabled me to be much more precise as I explored the phenomenon.

Rhino’s Grasshopper plug-in made it possible to really play with the pattern. This parametrically-driven, mathematically accurate model enabled me to change various aspects of the case. The custom-built tool made it possible to pull on various strings – including hole sizes, line thicknesses, and more.

Of course, a phone case needs to do more than just look cool. I carefully designed around all the important parts of the phone – cameras, sensors, buttons – so the case would be as practical as it is beautiful.

Think of it like having a digital sculpture that you can tweak and adjust until it's just right. Have an iPhone 12? No problem. A Samsung device. We gotcha.

I named it the Slinger Case as a fun nod to Spider-Man – the web-like design reminded me of everyone's favorite wall-crawler.
